EPO Zeta (Erythropoietin)
Recombinant erythropoietin biosimilar studied for red blood cell production and oxygen-carrying capacity.

Research overview
Epoetin zeta is a biological medicine and a recombinant form of human erythropoietin (EPO). It is classified as a "biosimilar" to epoetin alfa, meaning it is highly similar in structure, function, and safety profile to the original reference product.
The mechanism of action for epoetin zeta is identical to that of endogenous erythropoietin. It binds to and activates EPO receptors on the surface of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. This stimulation promotes their survival, proliferation, and differentiation into mature red blood cells (erythrocytes), thereby increasing the body's red blood cell mass and hemoglobin levels.
Epoetin zeta is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) used clinically to treat symptomatic anemia, particularly anemia resulting from chronic kidney disease or from chemotherapy in cancer patients. By stimulating red blood cell production, it can reduce the need for blood transfusions.
